Life Without Plastics Project

The “Life without plastics” project was implemented across Tamale Metro and Sagnarigu Municipal in Ghana’s Northern Region. The “Life without plastics” intervention deployed a strategic engagement of a non-traditional actor in the work of NGOs: Proprietors of businesses, to enhance their awareness of the harmful impact of plastics on the environment and the eco-friendly alternatives that exist. This idea is as a result of the existing evidence of an extensive use of plastics in Northern Ghana. Yet, the waste management systems, policies and culture in Ghana is not progressive. That is why only 10% of plastic waste in Ghana is collected per studies. It is a fact that plastics are heavily used by businesses in their daily business activities. Even till now, whiles there is the need for a cultural change away from the use of plastic, the sector that drives its use (businesses) needs to be well engaged, conscientized to move away from promoting the excessive use of plastics. This did not only enhanced NiV and its partners’ visibility in the arena of climate actions but it also openned the market for the production and purchase of bio-degradable product, a key area of entrepreneurial interest for some enterprises including the HerStart Project beneficiaries. Ambassadors had also been recruited from the business sector and led campaigns.
